Community Involvement

Kirk Development Company has been an active part of the Sunnyslope and Greater Phoenix Community for many years. We are a family owned and operated business which believes in giving back to the community by being part of and supporting various organizations.

Kirk Development Company is proud to have been involved with the Sunnyslope Kiwanis Club since 1986. Julie Sertich has been serving as Treasurer of the local Sunnyslope Club for over 5 years. The club benefits the community in several ways, the focus always on recognizing and encouraging excellence in young people.

They raise money for the following projects:

  • The club annually provides all third graders in the Washington School District with a brand new dictionary for their own personal use.

  • Sponsorship of young people’s “Key Clubs” at Central and Sunnyslope High Schools.

  • Sunnyslope Community Center registration payments for students needing assistance.

  • Reading Across America volunteering.

  • Mentoring Royal Palm students.

  • Bringing Up Grades (BUG) incentive program for first and second grade students.

  • Student of the Month recognition programs for middle and high school students.
  • Officer of the Month recognition program for Desert Horizon Precinct personnel.

  • Sponsor Betty's Kids at-risk students' after school program.

  • Desert Mission Food Bank holiday food drive assistance.

  • Hatcher Road cleanup project (annual).

  • Scholarships for two high school students (renewable).

  • John C. Lincoln Community Day participant.

  • Sunnyslope Community Center family day participant.

Kirk Development Company has also been active in the Sunnyslope Village Alliance.

Tom Sertich was elected to the board of directors and then a few years later was elected to the executive board as treasurer. Kirk Development Company has been a member of the Alliance from the very beginning. George Kirk was one of the first members and was an early president of the Alliance.

The goal of the Alliance is to improve the physical, social, business, recreational, educational and cultural environment in Sunnyslope so that it becomes an ideal community for people to live, work and play and a destination for all people in the Valley. They do this by:

  • Developing a positive, unique identity for Sunnyslope.

  • Providing opportunities for distribution of information, discussion of issues and interaction and networking among people in the community.

  • Sponsoring social, recreational, educational and cultural activities.

  • Organizing and motivating Sunnyslope citizens to be involved, contributing members of the community.

  • Promoting, recognizing and publicizing Sunnyslope, it's people, businesses and activities.
  • Working with governmental entities, businesses and nonprofit organizations to bring physical, economic, social, and cultural opportunities and improvements into the community.

  • Creating a special community character and design theme that preserves a village atmosphere.

  • Enhancing and protecting the natural environment.

  • Being an effective force for the good of the community.

Kirk Development participates in fundraising events for the Special Olympics. For people with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics is often the only place where they have an opportunity to participate in their communities and develop belief in themselves. For athletes, Special Olympics sports provide a gateway to empowerment, competence, acceptance and joy. The lessons learned in Special Olympics also impact their life skills. Sports training enhances focus and gives participants a structure for learning important lessons about perseverance, endurance and setting goals. Many people are surprised to know, more than half of adult Special Olympics athletes in the United States are employed, versus 10 percent of intellectually disabled persons who do not participate in Special Olympics.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

If you are a child/adult with intellectual disabilities and would like to be on a team, play sports, compete, or just have fun, come join Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ). We have teams throughout the State of Arizona or you could get your family, friends, school, day program, or local park district to start up a new team. If you are interested and need assistance please call Deb Randazzo, Athlete Outreach Coordinator, at 602.230.1112 or email here.
